Nagoya, Japan

Again I am so behind on my posts, but I want, no need, to finish my posts from Japan (and we left there on March 1, 2012).  Only a few more and I can let you in on our move to Alaska.

So in February, we were invited to attend our good friend, Nahoko-san's, traditional Japanese wedding in Nagoya, Japan.  We were so honored and blessed to be able to participate in this amazing experience.

On February10th, the Martyniaks boarded a shinkansen (aka: bullet train) from Tokyo to Nagoya. Of course, we first stopped in the station and picked up some delicious bentos for the journey. The kids were so excited to ride the bullet train and kept saying, "we're going so fast!".   After a 90 minute journey, we headed to the Hilton hotel and were surprised to find out that the hotel had given us a complimentary executive room.  If you have ever stayed in a Japanese hotel, you would be as thrilled as we were about this... just think from tiny to small ... it makes a big difference.  We had a fantastic view of the city from our window and the kids loved laying down looking out from the 23rd floor.

O-bento: yum, yum!
happy to be riding the shinkansen

So we didn't want to waste any time sitting around and headed straight out to Nagoya Castle for some great sight seeing, a little geocaching and, of course, stamps for my book.

We were able to explore all 5 floors of the castle.  It is more like a museum inside, with displays and photos and artifacts.  We did get to take pictures with a scale replica of the female dolphin roof decoration that was on the original castle.  It was huge.   Another fun exhibit, let us try our hands at pulling the blocks used to build the castle in the "old school" way.

This is a "kiyomasa stone"  they are placed thruout the castle walls
to demonstrate the defensibility of the castle.
Riding the trains.
Geocaching, of course.
